  • Co-operative Research in Australia
    A Co-operatives Research Group at the Faculty of Economics and Business, the University of Sydney has been formed and received Faculty funding. Greg Patmore is Director and Leanne Cutcher is Deputy Director of the Group

Founded in 1895, ICA has 239 member organisations from 89 countries active in all sectors of the economy. Together these co-operatives represent more than 800 million individuals worldwide.
  • Co-operation in Haiti
    The International Co-operative Alliance (ICA)  is mobilising its members and partners to provide emergency relief and reconstruction assistance to co-operators in Haiti following the earthquake on 12 January 2010. Visit the ICA web site at http://www.ica.coop for an ICA news release and access updated information including  an ICA Co-operative Reconstruction Fund.
  • International Year of Co-operatives

    The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2012 as the International Year for Co-operatives. Co-operatives Australia had urged the Australian Government to support this initiative at the United Nations. For more information go to the web site of the International Co-operative Alliance.
  • Co-operative Tasmania Initiative
    The Tasmanian Greens political party in the Australian state of Tasmania has released a new policy - Co-operative Tasmania. The policy aims to provide practical assistance to local communities seeking to establish a co-operative - including provisions for the government to prevent asset-stripping. The initiative is significant because the last time any government in Australia had policies supporting co-operatives was in the early to mid 1980's when the NSW and Victorian Labor governments were supporting worker co-operaqtives for a short time.
  • An Australian Perspective on the ICA Congress
    Trent Bartlett, the Chief Executive Officer of Australia's Capricorn Society, has been attending the International Co-operative Alliance General Assembly, 19 - 20 November 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland. Read his observations on the General Assembly - the DotCoop Global Awards, the ACT! climate petition, the keynote address, the three thematic sessions and the statutory business.

Co-operatives Australia has issued a new statement on Co-operative Education. Co-operatives Australia has published the paper to affirm the importance of co-operative education to the co-operative business model e.g. agricultural, child care, commodity, fishing, housing and retail co-operatives.

Co-operatives Australia has made a submission on the proposed Co-operatives National Law. The submission identifies key principles that should inform the process of developing and implementing co-operatives legislation.

CFSA and Co-operatives National Law

The Co-operative Federation of South Australia Inc. has made two submissions to the Co-operatives National Law Review on the proposed Co-operatives National Law in letters of 17 and 24 February 2010. The CFSA has given australia.coop permission to make the submissions available here.
 

International Year of Co-operatives Proclaimed

The United Nations General Assembly has just adopted a resolution proclaiming 2012 as International Year of Co-operatives. Co-operatives Australia wrote to the Australian Government supporting an International Year of Co-operatives.  For news on this and updates visit the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) web site.
