Socio Economic Impact of Co-operatives

SocioEconomicImpact 002At the International cooperative 2012 Summit, which took place in Quebec City between 8 and 11 October 2012, IRECUS unveiled the results of a new study on the socio-economic impact of cooperatives and mutuals in the world.

How cooperatives and mutuals contribute to build a better world? What is their socio-economic impact in our world? Heirs of more than three centuries of reflection and practice, these companies remain today one of the major organisational and educational innovations which would constitute, if they formed a country, 9e global economy and the largest democracy in the world.

The report focusses on the 300 largest co-operatives throughout the world - using data from Annual Reports of 2010, websites and direct contact with management. The objective was to consider the socio-economic impact of co-operatives and mutuals and the contribution of their identity on the results =including the inter-relationships and inter-dependencies of these values.

The report concludes that co-operatives and mutuals clearly contribute to economic, social and political stabilization and regulation, maintain equitable access to goods and services and promote economic, social ande political diversity.

There is an admission, however, that co-operatives and mutuals have an intrinsic and historic capacity and potential which is not necessary achieved. There follows some recommendations on education - called a few angles but there is no substative relationship between the report's analysis and the angles identified. There is no analysis, for example, of the differing realities of co-operative values and principles and while the analysis is an important contribution it is more theoretical than developmental and practical and the nature and impact of co-operative education.
