An Australian Perspective on the ICA General Assembly

Australian co-operator Trent Bartlett,Chief Executive Officer of the Capricorn Society Limited, attended the International Co-operative Alliance's General Assembly on the 19 - 20 November 2009 in Geneva, Switzerland. Trent has filed a report on this important meeting covering the DotCoop Global Awards, the ACT! climate petition, the keynote address, the three discussion themes and the statutory business. The ICA's official documentation and reports will be available soon from the International Co-operative Alliance web site.

australia.coop was originally established in 2003 by the Co-operative Federation of Victoria Ltd (Co-operatives Victoria) In establishing australia.coop, Co-operatives Victoria hoped that eventually the web site would be run by and for the Australian co-operative movement.
Co-operatives Australia has agreed to assume responsibility for australia.coop from October 2009. Co-operatives Australia is the national body for State Co-operative Federations. It is an unincorporated body with membership by the Co-operative Federations of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia, and represents co-operatives in every sector of the Australian economy.
As a consequence, Co-operatives Victoria has now established a new web site: http://www.victoria.coop

Co-operatives Australia has published a top 100 list of co-operatives, credit unions and mutuals by annual turnover. Co-operatives Australia is the national body for State Co-operative Federations. It is an unincorporated body with membership by the Co-operative Federations of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia, and represents co-operatives in every sector of the Australian economy.

Co-operatives Australia has written to the Australian Prime Minister, the Hon. Kevin Rudd MP, supporting the call by the Board of the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) to each of the G20 governments, that the G20 at its meeting in April 2009 in London examine every option in seeking to overcome the current financial crisis, and asking that they give serious consideration to the advantages of the co-operative model of business.
