Demutualisation Check List

A Demutualisation Checklist has been developed to assist co-operators to assess demutualisation proposals for their co-operative. In assessing proposals for demutualisation, members of co-operatives need to analyse their co-operatives and their own relationship to the co-operative.

What have been the advantages of co-operation for members?
What have been the disadvantages of co-operation for members?
Has the co-operative maintained a co-operative education program that includes managers and directors?
What is the member participation rate in co-operative activities and what has been the long-term trend?
Is the management of the co-operative committed to co-operative values and principles and how is this demonstrated?
Is the board committed to co-operative values and principles and how is this demonstrated?

Does the documentation for any proposed demutualisation fairly and substantially assess the benefits and limitations of demutualisation?
What are the consequences of demutualisation for the co-operative, the members and the community?
Who will benefit from demutualisation and how?
Who will not benefit from demutualisation and how?
